Warm and wonderful, Kaia celebrates modern Greek cuisine

I know it when I see it.

I’m not talking about obscenity, although the grape leaves at Kaia — lush with foie gras, topped with gleaming silver anchovies — are so indecently swoony that a bow-chicka-wow-wow riff plays in my head when I take my first bite.

I mean an excellent restaurant. I know it in my bones. I think we all do. Within days of opening, it was clear that Kaia is one. In the South End, this spot from Xenia Greek Hospitality (Bar Vlaha, Krasi) doesn’t so much pay tribute to the Aegean coast as it does blow kisses and bestow warm hugs to the region, while wearing impeccably tailored linen and the perfect summer fragrance. With its pretty, palest-pink interior, Kaia is a mood, as warm as it is stylish. It does what Xenia’s places do best: return hospitality to its factory settings. It is nice to be nice, and to be treated nicely. Xenia’s restaurants give us what we want. Style and care. Fashion and function.
